The Solution
Speed Up Britain is calling on the Government to close the loopholes in the law that are holding Britain back. Only then can we fully deliver the investment in the UK’s mobile infrastructure, which is ready to go and will provide benefits for us all as we work together to rebuild in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis.
The industry is working tirelessly to boost mobile communications, using the powers granted by the Government within the Electronic Communications Code to upgrade equipment, build new sites, and make savings to invest in better mobile networks and rural connectivity.
However, the Code is not being implemented as intended so some changes to it are needed to unblock the system. If this doesn’t happen, mobile connectivity in the UK will lag behind other countries and our economy will suffer.
Speed Up Britain is calling on Government to make specific, targeted changes to the Code which:
- Enable necessary sharing and upgrading of sites
- Remove loopholes to speed up site agreements
- Provide a consistent framework between different regimes
- Ensure access to new Code rights
- Allow an efficient renewal process for expired pre-Code Agreements
We are also calling on the Government to take the lead in rolling out best practice across public sector landowners including local authorities, NDPBs and Whitehall departments.
